image002.gif What are Ethics?  Ethics in its broader sense, deals with human conduct in relation to what is morally good and bad, right and wrong. It is the application of values to decision making. These values include honesty, fairness, responsibility, respect and compassion."

TIPS FOR LEARNING:

This method works well for me.  Unfortunately, I didn’t really figure this out until my 5th year of my Masters program.  Like my masters level courses, Accounting courses involves a lot of reading, especially in the beginning.

HOW TO READ--WHAT'S YOUR STRATEGY?:

Hint:  It is not a good idea to begin reading the text the night before the exam. . . .

1)Read the Learning Objectives (beginning of chapter), the Decision Point (User’s Focus, this is to spark your interest).

 2) Go to the end of the chapter and read the Chapter Review, as slowly as you can stand.  Note concepts and unfamiliar words.

3) Take a look at the Homework exercises and problems

4) Now you are ready to skim the chapter—note the section headings, illustrations, key points, and financial statements used for illustration.  Don’t get bogged down in this step!

5) Now (finally!) go back and read the chapter in detail; you should be able to read faster since some of the concepts are now more familiar to you.

FINALLY, USE YOUR CLASSTIME TO “test for understanding”.  Did you get the concepts?  Can you do the homework?  Testing for understanding assumes that you may have gotten the wrong idea occasionally.  Allow yourself enough time to recover, if you’ve gone down the wrong road!
